Here's what's actually happening: we've quietly replaced judging work by its value with judging people by the difficulty of their path—and then confused the two.

The argument is never really about quality. It's about deservingness. And deservingness is being defined by a single question: did you pay the toll I paid?

When Scarcity Becomes Currency

What's actually being defended isn't standards. It's legitimacy itself. And legitimacy has been quietly defined not by outcome, but by process. More specifically: by how much you suffered through the process.

This currency buys you things: the right to call yourself a professional, status among peers who recognize the toll, a narrative that explains why you deserve success, protection from newcomers who might dilute the field.

And like any currency, its value depends on scarcity. If everyone can do it, the currency is worthless.

So when new tools make skill less scarce—when they lower barriers to entry, speed up production, automate difficult technical steps—they're not just threatening your job or your income. They're threatening the entire exchange rate. They're devaluing the currency you've spent years accumulating.

Think about inflation. When a government prints too much money, existing currency loses purchasing power. The dollars you saved are suddenly worth less. You didn't lose money—the value of money itself changed.

That's what's happening here. The AI artist isn't taking anything from you. But their existence in the market changes the exchange rate. Your ten years of learning anatomy and perspective—the currency you accumulated—suddenly buys less status, less certainty, less protection.

And inflation always hits hardest the people who saved the most. The person who spent six years and $100,000 on an MFA is sitting on more accumulated suffering-currency than the person who taught themselves by reading. When that currency devalues, the MFA graduate has more to lose.

This is why the reaction is so visceral. We've made scarcity of skill into a moral category. Difficulty equals virtue. Struggle equals authenticity. Barriers to entry equal proof of worthiness.

A bad painting made with years of suffering is still bad. But we don't like admitting that. Because if we do, we have to face something uncomfortable: maybe effort doesn't automatically transfer value to the thing produced.

The sarcastic voice isn't claiming all outputs are equally good. It's pointing out something sharper: we've retrofitted effort into a moral framework where suffering equals legitimacy, then used that framework to gatekeep who gets to claim creative identity.

Two Truths That Won't Reconcile

Two truths are colliding, and we want them both to be true in the same way. They aren't.

Truth A (deeply ingrained): Effort, discipline, and struggle do shape judgment, taste, and depth. The person who's painted for ten years probably has better intuition about composition than someone who's painted for ten days. Experience matters. Practice matters. Process knowledge matters. Real expertise exists. Some barriers protect against invisible failures that only become apparent later, at scale, under pressure, when the stakes are high.

The problem isn't acknowledging this. The problem is when we use it to avoid the harder question: is this specific work, right now, good? Because sometimes the shortcut does produce something genuinely valuable. Sometimes the person who skipped the traditional path has better instincts. Sometimes the barriers were protecting mediocrity, not quality.

The confusion is about what skill is for. Is it for creating good work? Or is it for proving you deserve to create at all?

If it's the former, then the outcome is what we should judge. If it's the latter, then we're not talking about art—we're talking about credentialism.

The Counterfeiters

When this happens, the person who took the traditional path faces a specific cognitive threat. Because if the shortcut works, what was the long path for?

In currency terms: these people look like counterfeiters. Not because they are counterfeiters—but because that's how they're perceived by people protecting accumulated currency. They didn't go through proper channels. They found a way to produce something that looks like what legitimate currency buys—status, recognition, creative identity—without paying the toll.

And the perception of counterfeiting threatens the whole system. If anyone can produce something that passes for legitimate, why accumulate the real thing?

"It's not real art."
"They didn't actually make it."
"Anyone could do that."

Notice what's not being said: "It's ugly" or "It's poorly composed" or "It doesn't communicate anything." The critique isn't aesthetic. It's ontological. The work doesn't count because the process was wrong.

This is the language of someone protecting currency from perceived counterfeiters.

How Institutions Weaponize the Toll

But here's where it gets structural. This isn't just individual psychology. Institutions have learned to use the currency of suffering as a gatekeeping mechanism.

The MFA program doesn't just teach craft. It creates a credentialed class. The credential signals: this person paid the toll, suffered correctly, earned their legitimacy. The MFA becomes currency that can be exchanged for teaching positions, grants, literary citizenship.

The same pattern repeats: law schools create artificial scarcity through the bar exam. Medical schools through residencies. Tech companies through algorithm interviews testing fundamentals many programmers rarely apply directly in their day-to-day work. In each case, the institution benefits from maintaining the toll. If the barrier drops, the credential loses value.

This creates a weird alliance: the people who suffered through the system have an incentive to defend the system, because their currency is denominated in that system's terms. Criticizing the toll means admitting you might have suffered unnecessarily.

So people double down. The harder the path was, the more fiercely they defend it. Innovation dies because the person who finds an easier path gets dismissed as a fraud. Access narrows because the toll selects for privilege, not ability. We stop evaluating work and start evaluating CVs.

"I mean, I learn what I need when I need it. The apps work."
"Right, but why do they work? That's what separates engineers from code monkeys, you know?"

Notice how it slides. The CS grad starts by asking about the work, but within three exchanges it's shifted to process legitimacy. The bootcamp grad could be writing better code. Doesn't matter. They didn't pay the toll.

The CS grad isn't consciously protecting their currency. They genuinely believe they're defending standards. But watch what's actually being defended: not code quality, but the credentialing system that gave them status.

The Existential Question

For many people, creative identity is bound to the difficulty of the path. Status comes from having overcome barriers. Narrative comes from having suffered correctly.

When new technology lowers those barriers, it threatens the entire story of what makes you special. So the argument shifts from "is this valuable" to "was this made the right way." From outcome to process. From quality to legitimacy.

Once you notice it, you see it everywhere. The frame keeps slipping from "is this good" to "does this count."

And if the hierarchy collapses, what was all that suffering for?

If meaning can be created without suffering, what was the suffering for?

The suffering wasn't pointless. It did shape you. The years of practice probably did develop your taste, your judgment, your intuition. But those things are valuable because of what they enable you to create, not because they function as a toll that guarantees legitimacy.

The suffering was the path you took. It wasn't currency. It wasn't a moral down payment. It was just the way you learned.

And realizing that shakes something fundamental. Because if the path doesn't determine the value of the destination, we have to evaluate the destination on its own terms.
